In celebration of World Cleanup Day, the Young African Society for Innovation and Future (YASIF) carried out a creative and educational outreach at LEA Primary School, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, where pupils were introduced to the innovative concept of transforming waste into fashion. The initiative, held last Tuesday, aimed to promote environmental awareness and responsibility among young learners by showing them how everyday waste can be repurposed into useful and beautiful items.

The day began with a courtesy visit to the school principal, where the YASIF team outlined the objectives of the outreach and emphasized its focus on fostering sustainability through creativity. The principal and teachers warmly welcomed the team, acknowledging the importance of instilling environmental values in children from an early age.

Inside the classroom, the atmosphere was lively and engaging as pupils learned the basics of upcycling — the process of giving new life to discarded materials. With guidance from YASIF facilitators, they transformed worn-out clothes and fabric scraps into creative items such as tote bags, decorative frames, and simple accessories. Working in small groups, the children discovered that innovation and care for the environment can go hand in hand, and that sustainability can be both fun and rewarding.

At the end of the session, the pupils proudly presented their finished creations to their peers and teachers. Their works reflected ingenuity, teamwork, and a growing understanding of how small actions can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable world.

The outreach concluded with group photographs, closing remarks, and the formal handover of the finished products to the school leadership. The event was a blend of learning, laughter, and lasting impact — an inspiring example of how environmental education can be brought to life through hands-on activities.

Supported by the Federal Ministry of Environment (FMENV) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), YASIF’s outreach formed part of its broader participation in the global World Cleanup Day movement. Through this initiative, YASIF reaffirmed its dedication to climate education, sustainable practices, and empowering young people to take active roles in building a greener and more responsible future for all.
