We are pleased to kick-start the implementation of Civic Guard Nigeria, a consortium-led project focused on strengthening civic space and advancing environmental justice through grassroots accountability and the protection of environmental defenders in Nigeria. Led by YASIF Nigeria, the project is implemented in partnership with the @Centre for Peace Advocacy and Sustainable Development @CEPASD, @Ecocycle Development Foundation, Susveu Human Development Foundation, and EDGES AFRICA. The project is supported by Civicus under the Flexible Support Mechanism Programme and aims to advance grassroots accountability, protect environmental defenders, and promote an enabling civic space for environmental action across Nigeria.

YASIF convened 100 members of the Pegi and Kango communities for a hands-on training on climate-resilient and safe sanitation systems. The sessions covered flood-safe latrine construction, hygiene practices during extreme weather (including menstrual hygiene), and wastewater management. This initiative built on the Community RISE project, co-implemented with consortium partners JDPCI (lead partner), Big Family 360, and Centre For Women Studies and Intervention (CWSI) The training strengthened the capacity of youth and women in both communities to: Construct flood-safe latrines; Promote safe sanitation at household and community levels; Apply proper personal hygiene and handwashing techniques; and reuse wastewater efficiently. These skills enhanced resilience against climate-related disasters and disease outbreaks. As a direct outcome, participants established a Climate-resilient Changemakers Forum, committed to driving sustainable, community-led actions that reduce disaster risks and foster shared responsibility. To extend the impact, YASIF also distributed flyers and posters with key sanitation and hygiene messages, reaching wider community members.
On Wednesday, 9 September 2026, YASIF organised a participatory Indigenous Tree Planting and drainage cleanup exercise in Kango Community, Kuje Area Council, Abuja. The initiative was part of the consortium-led Community RISE Project, supported by CAFOD, to advance environmental sustainability and climate resilience. The exercise brought together 50 members of the Kango community, who received hands-on guidance in planting and nurturing indigenous species such as Neem, Umbrella, and Moringa trees. This practical engagement fostered environmental restoration while strengthening local capacity to respond to climate challenges. As a result, the participants committed to caring for and monitoring the trees’ growth, reflecting a collective dedication to combating climate change and promoting long-term sustainability.
To mark International Youth Day 2026, YASIF Nigeria Executive Director Blessing Ewa, featured in two interviews with RAPID TV and PFSEE She spoke on youth participation, employability, mentorship, volunteering and the future of work, sharing perspectives on the opportunities and challenges facing young people today. At YASIF Nigeria, we remain committed to creating opportunities that equip young people with the skills, knowledge and support they need to participate meaningfully and build better futures.
