In celebration of World Cleanup Day, the Young African Society for Innovation and Future (YASIF) led a transformative community cleanup exercise in Karonmajigi, Abuja, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and youth-driven environmental responsibility. The event, held in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment (FMENV) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), brought together volunteers, community leaders, and environmental stakeholders in a unified effort to promote cleanliness and raise awareness about environmental protection.

Activities began at the Hakimi Palace, where participants assembled early in the morning. Cleaning tools and safety gear were distributed before teams moved through the community to collect and segregate waste. As they cleaned, volunteers also engaged residents in conversations on proper waste disposal and recycling, emphasizing the importance of individual and collective action in achieving a sustainable future.
YASIF was joined by several partners, including Flood Data Sync, Trash Mongers, and Eco Steward, who worked alongside volunteers to ensure a well-coordinated and impactful exercise. At the end of the cleanup, Trash Mongers evacuated the segregated waste for proper disposal, demonstrating the importance of responsible waste management and environmental accountability.

The exercise concluded with a sensitization session back at Hakimi Palace, where representatives from the Federal Ministry of Environment, NESREA, and Flood Data Sync delivered insightful presentations. They spoke on sustainability, environmental regulations, flood risk management, and the critical role of communities in combating environmental challenges. Their messages reinforced the need for consistent, localized action as a foundation for national progress.
To round off the day, participants shared light refreshments, took group photographs, and reflected on their collective achievements. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, purpose, and a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship.
Through this initiative, YASIF once again demonstrated its leadership in promoting youth participation, environmental consciousness, and sustainable development across Nigeria. The organization’s effort at Karonmajigi serves as a powerful reminder that cleaner, safer communities begin with individuals who care enough to take action.
As the world marks World Cleanup Day, YASIF’s example continues to inspire a generation of young Africans to rise, act, and create lasting impact—one community at a time.
