In celebration of World Clean-Up Day, the Young African Sustainable Impact Forum (YASIF) organized the Waste to Fashion Challenge, an initiative designed to inspire creativity, promote environmental consciousness, and encourage sustainable innovation in Nigeria’s fashion industry. The challenge aimed to demonstrate that waste materials, when viewed through the lens of creativity, can be transformed into valuable, functional, and stylish products.
The Waste to Fashion Challenge attracted several talented participants from across Nigeria who showcased their ability to turn discarded materials into meaningful fashion pieces and lifestyle products. The event served as a testament to YASIF’s commitment to sustainability and its dedication to empowering young Africans to lead the movement toward a cleaner and greener continent.
After a thorough review process, four entries emerged as top finalists, each demonstrating originality, innovation, and a strong sense of environmental purpose. The overall winner, Oni Iyanuoluwa (@shalom.o_), was gifted by YASIF for her outstanding creativity and commitment to sustainability. Her project focused on upcycling fabric scraps to produce new fashion items that reduce textile waste and promote responsible production. Beyond the creative aspect, her initiative also extended compassion to children in local communities, showing how sustainable fashion can foster both environmental and social impact.
In recognizing her achievement, YASIF celebrated Oni’s ingenuity and her dedication to driving positive change through fashion. Her work perfectly embodies YASIF’s mission of inspiring young Africans to use innovation and creativity as tools for building a sustainable future.
Other top entries also impressed the judges with their thought-provoking ideas. DHadiza Shettima designed a waterproof shopping bag made from recycled sachet water bags, offering a creative solution to the growing problem of plastic waste. PlastiBuild Creative Solutions Limited showcased its EcoFeet Pro footwear made from discarded materials, merging technology, sustainability, and style into one practical design. Madiva Artistry (@madiva___artistry) reimagined cartons, straws, and fabric waste into bold, avant-garde fashion pieces that challenged traditional ideas of beauty and waste.
Each of these projects reflected the core values of YASIF: innovation, impact, and sustainability. They demonstrated that the future of African creativity lies in the ability to merge environmental responsibility with design thinking and community awareness.
The Waste to Fashion Challenge was more than a competition; it was a statement of intent. It called on young Africans to rethink their approach to waste, encouraging them to adopt sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet. By rewarding innovators like Oni Iyanuoluwa, YASIF reaffirmed its role as a driving force in promoting youth-led sustainability initiatives across Africa.
Through this challenge, YASIF continues to empower a generation that views sustainability not as a trend but as a responsibility. The organization remains committed to supporting projects that transform ideas into tangible impact, fostering a culture of creativity, purpose, and environmental stewardship.
