Abuja, Nigeria – August 2024: The Youth Awareness for Sustainable Impact Foundation (YASIF), in partnership with leading environmental organizations, has successfully carried out the Waste-Free Communities Project in Karonmajigi, Abuja. The initiative demonstrated how collaboration, innovation, and grassroots action can transform waste management in Nigeria while advancing national sustainability goals.
The project brought together partners including Ecocykle, EcoSteward, Ecobarter, and NESREA to address the urgent challenge of waste pollution and turn it into an opportunity for empowerment. By training, sensitizing, and equipping communities, the project not only cleaned up the environment but also created pathways for economic inclusion and social impact.
Working with Ecocykle, young people across three states were introduced to practical upcycling skills that sparked creativity, innovation, and participation in Nigeria’s emerging circular economy. With EcoSteward, households were sensitized on effective waste management, adopting new habits that promote cleaner neighborhoods and long-term sustainability. Through the WRAP Programme led by Ecobarter, women in Karonmajigi gained advanced upcycling skills, access to working tools, and direct income opportunities, linking environmental responsibility to women’s empowerment. In addition, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) provided policy guidance and national support to ensure the project aligned with Nigeria’s environmental priorities.
The Waste-Free Communities Project created lasting change by empowering young people, supporting women, and instilling sustainable practices in households. More than a cleanup campaign, it showed how community-driven action can deliver environmental and economic benefits side by side.
At YASIF, our mission remains clear: to mobilize young people as drivers of sustainable development and expand the model of waste-free communities across Nigeria and beyond. The success of this initiative proves that when organizations and communities work together, a greener and more resilient future is possible.
