How YASIF Nigeria is Leading Sustainable Change
YASIF Nigeria is a youth-led organization committed to driving sustainable climate solutions by engaging young people and women across communities in Nigeria. With a focus on grassroots empowerment, YASIF has championed projects that tackle environmental issues while creating economic opportunities.
Over the years, YASIF Nigeria has worked extensively with women and youth to build a greener and cleaner environment. Since 2024, more than 2,700 individuals in 12 communities across four states have benefitted from its flagship initiatives: Project Waste Free Communities (PWFC) and the Empower Communities for Plastic Sustainability (ECPS) program.
Project Waste Free Communities (PWFC)
The PWFC initiative mobilizes grassroots communities to adopt eco-friendly practices through hands-on involvement. YASIF Nigeria organizes community-led clean-up drives, upcycling and recycling activities, and practical training on global best practices in waste management and segregation.
So far, over 1,500 women and youth in the Karonmajiji, Durumi, and Galadima areas of Abuja have been trained through this project. Beyond reducing environmental pollution, PWFC fosters sustainable income opportunities for families and contributes to strengthening local economies.
Empower Communities for Plastic Sustainability (ECPS)
In partnership with the Global Plastic Action Partnership, YASIF Nigeria launched the ECPS initiative to promote plastic sustainability in Niger, Kano, and Cross River States.
This project equips women, youth, and persons with disabilities with digital skills and hands-on training, empowering them to become champions of plastic waste management. Participants learn to creatively repurpose plastic waste including old tyres, water sachets, PET bottles, and nylons—into useful items such as side stools, shoes, storage boxes, and center tables.
To date, ECPS has trained 1,200 individuals across nine communities. As part of the program’s next phase, these communities are currently developing their own sustainability projects. These projects will be presented during a pitching contest, where participants will showcase their ideas and leverage their knowledge in business, finance, and project management to compete for prizes.
At YASIF Nigeria, we believe that real climate action starts at the community level. By empowering people with the tools and knowledge to act sustainably, we are not only protecting the environment but also unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and social inclusion.
Together, we can build a waste-free, greener Nigeria.
